Pigmentation: Why It Comes Back and How to Keep Skin Clear

Dark spots, sun damage and melasma are some of the most common concerns I see in clinic. Professional treatments such as the cosmelan® depigmentation treatment give excellent results, but pigmentation can return if skin is not looked after at home.

Why pigmentation returns

Pigment is produced by cells called melanocytes. UV light, visible light, heat, hormones and inflammation can all switch them back on. That is why maintenance is not optional: it is what keeps your results.

1. Protect every day

Daily high-protection SPF is the single most important step. For pigmentation-prone skin, choose a formula designed for it, such as mesoestetic® mesoprotech® melan 130 pigment control, or Medik8 Advanced Day Ultimate Protect SPF 50+. Reapply during the day when outdoors.

2. Maintain with targeted actives

3. Keep inflammation down

Picking, over-exfoliating and harsh products can trigger post-inflammatory pigmentation. Keep your routine gentle and consistent.

4. Book regular reviews

Pigmentation changes with the seasons and with hormones. Regular reviews mean we can adjust your routine before pigment has a chance to return. Read more about pigmentation treatment at SkinVitál Clinic.
